What is QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode designed to store information in a machine-readable format. Unlike traditional barcodes that store data in a single direction, QR codes can contain various forms of information, including text, web addresses, contact details, and wireless network credentials.

QR codes are made up of black and white square patterns arranged within a grid. When scanned by compatible devices, the encoded information is interpreted and presented to the user. Their ability to hold more information and remain readable even when partially damaged has contributed to their widespread adoption across many industries.

How QR Code Scanning Works

QR code scanning begins by locating special positioning markers known as finder patterns. These large square patterns, positioned in three corners of the code, enable the scanner to determine the QR code’s location, size, and orientation, even when it is rotated or tilted. After identifying these markers, the scanner analyzes timing and alignment patterns to map the entire grid structure accurately, ensuring reliable reading from both flat and slightly distorted surfaces.

Once the grid has been mapped, the scanner reads the arrangement of black and white modules and converts them into binary data. This binary information is then decoded into meaningful content such as website addresses, contact details, text, or network credentials. QR codes also include built-in error correction data, allowing missing or damaged sections to be reconstructed so that the encoded information can still be interpreted successfully.
